Since our launch in 2013, we've been publishing inspirational pocket guides to help creative entrepreneurs, makers and Doers work smarter and create positive change. Written by experts whose stories and ideas have inspired others to go and Do, the collection spans business, design, wellbeing and sustainable living, with each book focusing on the ‘doing’ rather than the background theory. Books to inspire action.
It all started back in 2011, when I came across a Do Lecture online. The speaker, Craig Mod, was talking about the future of print in a digital world. I had recently left my commissioning job at Penguin Random House, and it wasn't long before I was exploring the Do Lectures website to find out more. Later that day, I emailed the info@ address saying how much I liked what they were doing and asking if they had considered publishing books by their speakers. A week later I had a call with the founders, David and Clare Hieatt, who invited me along to the next event - and we started to make plans.
The Do Book Company launched in the spring of 2013 as a new independent publishing house with five books: Do Grow, Do Birth, Do Story, Do Improvise and Do Disrupt. The covers by artist and designer James Victore armed us with a strong identity and that same year, we were stocked in shops at the Tate, the Design Museum and the Conran Store, to name but a few. In 2014, we were shortlisted in the Best Brand/Series Identity category of the British Book Design and Production Awards.
There are now 30+ books in the collection and they can be found in bookstores around the world, in different languages, and in print, digital and audiobook formats. A royalty from each copy sold goes to the author and back to the Do Lectures in Wales - the annual event we continue to attend, and from where we source all our authors.
